Discovery and Confirmation in Evolutionary Psychology

چکیده
The defining insight of evolutionary psychology consists of bringing considerations drawn from evolutionary biology to bear on the study of human psychology. So characterized, evolutionary psychology encompasses a large range of views about the nature and evolution of human psychology as well as diverging opinions about the proper method for studying them. In this article, I propose to clarify and evaluate various aspects of evolutionary psychologists’ methodology, with a special focus on their heuristics of discovery—i.e., their methods for developing plausible hypotheses—and their strategies of confirmation—i.e., their methods for providing empirical support for these hypotheses. I will also evaluate several well-known objections raised against evolutionary psychology. Note that because views about psychology and evolution differ among evolutionary psychologists, I do not pretend to cover every method used in evolutionary psychology. Here is how I will proceed. In the first section, I analyze evolutionary psychologists’ main heuristic for the discovery of psychological traits. In the second section, I examine two heuristics for developing hypotheses about psychological

O16: How Do Concepts of Evolutionary Psychology and Evolutionary Psychiatry Explain Anxiety Disorders?
Our ancestors without fear, worry and anxiety are not our ancestors, as organisms without defense systems were extinct. Therefore, while behavior such as fear and anxiety are useful to prevent harm, the exaggerated form, that is, anxiety disorders, has more costs than benefits. Likewise, while a panic attack is a normal and useful response in the face of life-threatening danger, a panic disorde...
متن کاملHuman-Yeast Hybrids: New Visions to Genetic Disorders and Drug Discovery
Yeast has been a very helpful organism for centuries, especially with respect to fermentation of sugars and production of bread. However, for an even longer time, yeast has been a distant relative of humans having diverged from a common ancestor, about one billion years ago. More than one third of the yeast genes have human counterparts, despite this evolutionary distance. Yeast and human ortho...
متن کاملExperiential Thinking in Creationism—A Textual Analysis
Creationism is a religiously motivated worldview in denial of biological evolution that has been very resistant to change. We performed a textual analysis by examining creationist and pro-evolutionary texts for aspects of "experiential thinking", a cognitive process different from scientific thought. We observed characteristics of experiential thinking as follows: testimonials (present in 100% ...

BACKGROUND Peripheral epigenetic marks hold promise for understanding psychiatric illness and may represent fingerprints of gene-environment interactions. We conducted an initial examination of CpG methylation variation in children with or without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS Children age 7-12 were recruited, screened, evaluated and assigned to ADHD or non-ADHD gro...
